The Shortest Border in the World
An 80-metre blue rope runs across the sandy isthmus that forms the shortest border in the world. This line separates Spain from Morocco and Europe from Africa. On one side is the Rock of Vélez de la Gomera, a fortified military outpost occupied by the Spanish army for five centuries. On the other side is the Moroccan Rif fishing village of Badis, which seems to live suspended in time.
When a Spanish filmmaker arrives in Badis, members of four generations of the village observe the vestiges of Spanish colonisation from the distance.

Spanish Animation in the Spotlight
We now turn our attention to the creative and production journeys of Rock Bottom, Black Butterflies, and Sultana’s Dream. The first was selected for the ‘Feature Films’ competition section, while the second was selected for ‘Contrechamp’. Also competitive, the ‘Contrechamp’ section, introduced in 2019, aims to “provide a better platform for the most unique proposals and those that present greater challenges to the audience.” All three films prominently feature female components. Meanwhile, Buffalo Kids, showcased in the ‘Annecy Presents’ section, serves as a prime example of a title with a strong market appeal for general audiences.

Spanish film exhibition closes 2024 with optimism thanks to an extraordinary end to the year
The summer months, as well as November and December, saved a year whose first half did not record good figures. However, Spanish cinema and local distributors ended up being the year's big winners, increasing their revenues compared to 2023.

Q&A with Antonio Saura, founder of Latido Films
For over two decades at the helm of Latido Films, Antonio Saura has sold key titles of Spanish cinema worldwide. Moreover, his unique experience in the sector is also backed by his credits as a producer for Zampa Audiovisual and Zebra Producciones, as well as his role as deputy chairman of the European Film Academy from 2008 to 2019, and his two-year tenure as director of the Media Business School, one of the most prominent international business training institutions. Saura’s historical perspective is undoubtedly exceptional in terms of the history of Spanish cinema and its global reach.
Some recent, brilliant Spanish titles in Latido line-up include Isaki Lacuesta’s “Saturn Return”, Carlos Marques-Marcet’s “They Will Be Dust”, Antón Álvarez’s “The Flamenco Guitar of Yerai Cortés” or David Pérez Sañudo’s “The Last Romantics”.

A stronger legal framework of support, compatible with the different territories to promote European co-productions, the improvement of tax incentives linking them to the retention of intellectual property (IP), the imperative need to review and correct the underfunded children's programming, as well as to strengthen its protection and the development of a common guide on good sustainable practices are some of the conclusions and objectives of work that they highlighted in Animar_BCN, a brainstorming event that was held last November in Barcelona.

🏆 'TERMINAL' WINS THE GOLDEN DOVE AT DOK LEIPZIG!
Alexandre Siqueira’s animated short film has been awarded the Golden Dove for Best Short Film in the International Competition for Animated Film at the 69th edition of DOK Leipzig, one of the most prestigious recognitions on the international animation scene.
This award is particularly significant as it makes «Terminal» eligible for consideration for the Oscars, provided it meets the Academy’s eligibility requirements.
This achievement celebrates the #talent, #creativity and dedication of an outstanding international team. 'Terminal' is a co-production between BAP Animation Studio \(Portugal\), Xbo films \(France\) and Studio Kimchi \(Spain\), with the support of Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales and ICEC.
The jury praised the film for its “extraordinary visual tenderness and poetic sensitivity”, highlighting its deeply human exploration of love, loss and the dignity of choice.
Congratulations to Alexandre Siqueira, all the co-producing companies, and the entire artistic and technical team behind this beautiful film!
