From Spanish cinema in 2024 to planned releases for 2025

Spanish cinema is growing in terms of variety and revenue

In recent years, commercially successful productions in Spanish cinema seemed to have been limited to comedy or animation. However, 2024 broke this trend thanks to a healthy variety of titles and genres.

This diversity has allowed Spanish cinema to gain greater relevance within the general interest of audiences in the theatrical circuit. Beyond the huge success of the Father There is Only One 4 franchise, 2024 was notable for the undisputed success of Arantxa Echevarría's thriller Undercover, as well as the presence of a good number of adult titles capable of grossing between 1.5 and 3 million euros at the box office.

This group includes films such as The 47, A House On Fire, The Room Next Door, Ask Me What You Want, I'm Nevenka and The Red Virgin. Although surpassing 200,000 viewers is not always synonymous with profitability, it is evidence of a significant impact on the audience as well as a notable yield for cinemas. In many cases, these revenues have been the result of exceptional staying power, an effect that, in past years, was reserved for more niche and authorial products. During 2024, the films in the annual top 25 grossed the same figure as in 2023 but have multiplied their initial revenues by 5.8, one point more than in 2023. This reflects the fact that this adult cinema has enjoyed better recommendation effects among its target audience.

This relationship between a varied product and an adult, film-loving industry is one of the most positive elements of 2024, as it confirms the return of a segment of loyal viewers with purchasing power. This audience has not only been key to the Spanish successes, but also to other European titles, such as The Count of Monte-Cristo, The Zone of Interest, Perfect Days and One Life, to name but a few.
