We now turn our attention to the creative and production journeys of Rock Bottom, Black Butterflies, and Sultana’s Dream. The first was selected for the ‘Feature Films’ competition section, while the second was selected for ‘Contrechamp’. Also competitive, the ‘Contrechamp’ section, introduced in 2019, aims to “provide a better platform for the most unique proposals and those that present greater challenges to the audience.” All three films prominently feature female components. During the streaming boom and the lockdown in 2020, nature documentaries reached historic consumption peaks, a trend that continues today, supported by the development of new windows of exploitation such as fast channels.
