The growth of the Spanish video game industry

The legend of PC Fútbol

PC Fútbol managed to become the soccer manager par excellence in Spain, and also an international benchmark that was exported to several countries, although not with the resounding success it had in Spain, where it became a legend among video game players and soccer fans alike.

The ingredients that made the miracle of PC Fútbol possible, and that made it the best-selling Spanish video game franchise in history in its home country, selling over half a million copies of some of its releases, in an era when piracy was rampant, will probably never all come together again.

In the 90s, two key factors joined to ensure the success of a proposal like PC Fútbol, and the clues are in the name: the rising number of PCs in Spanish homes, and what was probably the time of greatest passion for soccer in Spain.

On the one hand, the first PC Fútbol releases were not at all demanding in terms of resources thanks to excellent optimization on the part of the developers, meaning that all soccer fans with a PC at home, even one that was initially only used for work, could easily run the game.

On the other hand, thanks to this peak of soccer passion, programs dedicated to the beautiful game that were far from the classic standards began to appear, the most notable being Canal +'s El día después. This is where the figure of Michael Robinson emerged from, the charismatic and likeable commentator that Dinamic Multimedia had the enormous vision - and a degree of luck - to hire to become the face of their game.

But there were other factors - or ingredients, to continue with the culinary analogy - that were fundamental to making the dish a success. Undoubtedly, one of them was to put it on sale in every kiosk in Spain at an unbeatable price, placing it next to the hundreds of flyers, stickers and other paraphernalia that piled up every year with the beginning of the soccer season.

However, this recipe for success still needed the addition of one more vital ingredient: the youth and energy of young developers willing to give their all to ensure that this virtual soccer game arrived punctually in every part of the country - and even so not always - just in time for the start of the football season.

PC Fútbol is also the story of the rise and fall of its developer, Dinamic Multimedia, and of how no matter how hard we try, some successes have an expiration date. Of how some projects that seem unbreakable are hanging from four fine threads that sustain them, that need each other, and that on many occasions can only exist in one specific and unrepeatable moment.

There have been many attempts to revive this legend in our development, some of them very recent, but as we said, there are stories that are impossible to repeat. And perhaps it is better that way. Better to remember them, enjoy them from a distance and honor them in the way they deserve. Let's play just one more round - and then Romario be back at Mérida.
