Powerful IPs Returning to the Market

A genre IP

“It was the first film produced by Filmax with an impact on the international market. That is why we hold it in such high regard and why it is so important to us,” - Iván Díaz, head of the company’s international sales division.

In Spain there are several recent examples. One of them is Los sin nombre (The Nameless), a classic 1999 horror film produced by the Barcelona mini-major Filmax. It was the debut of filmmaker Jaume Balagueró, who is now preparing its return as a fiction series.

Based on a novel by British writer Ramsey Campbell, Los sin nombre became the first big hit for Fantastic Factory, the emblematic brand created by Filmax, which marked a milestone in the internationalization and commercialization of genre films made in Spain.

“It was the first film produced by Filmax with an impact on the international
market. That is why we hold it in such high regard and why it is so important
to us,” says Iván Díaz, head of the company’s international sales division.

The film received enthusiastic receptions at international festivals such as
Sitges, Fantasporto and Brussels and made Balagueró one of the most influential
auteurs of genre cinema in Europe.

It was also a foretaste of other titles linked to the filmmaker from Barcelona
and Fantastic Factory, such as Darkness (2002), which grossed 22
million dollars in the United States, and the [REC] saga, a worldwide
success with audiences and critics, directed by Balagueró himself and Paco
Plaza.

Now the fiction seeks to combine Balagueró’s talent with the experience of
Filmax’s television department, headed by Pau Freixas (Pulseras rojas).

With the original project as a solid starting point, the series is in its
development phase, with the scripts about to be signed off. Production is
scheduled for next year.

“As it is a cult film, enough time has passed for audiences to enjoy the story
again in this very current and appreciated format,” adds Diaz.
