They Will Be Dust

A group of left-wing labour lawyers go into hiding in a house when the coup d’état takes place in Spain on 23 February 1981. Unsure of what to do, they debate between fleeing the country, staying in hiding to await events or trying to do something to defend Spain’s fledgling democracy. 

It’s winter holidays and fourteen-year-old Ana discovers that the metal plate she has in her arm from an accident she suffered as a child is now receiving a strange message in Morse code.

Raised in a repressive era where sexuality was taboo, they found their understanding of womanhood based on unspoken rules and implicit impositions. Now, their fearless voices incarnate in a single 65-year-old woman, who revisits a kaleidoscopic life of intertwined memories, secrets, and hidden desires.

Nasreen, a fleeing journalist, and her teenage son’s asylum application is denied in Brussels. Léa, a burnout immigration officer, has found out she is pregnant. Both of them will cross paths at a specific moment in time, and their meeting will have an impact and ripple effect on each other’s lives.

Conchita wants a brooch she can’t afford and contacts Jesús to fulfil her dream. But what she feels when she possesses it is not what she expected. 

Elena learns that the strange illness that her boyfriend Javier has is terminal, and there is no medication available to treat it. However, he claims to have found a way out of it: a spiritual cure that he believes will save him. 

1978. The outskirts of Barcelona, shaped and raised mainly by immigrants from Extremadura and Andalusia, built with their own hands, is not considered part of the city. Their shacks do not even have running water, electricity, or public transportation. Fed up with a city hall that keeps saying they can’t send transportation there because the shack-lined streets are too narrow and unsafe, a bus driver (Eduard Fernández) hijacks his own bus and drives it to his neighborhood to prove that his people can indeed have a public transportation line. An act of peaceful dissidence that transformed Barcelona and changed the concept of the outskirts forever.

Anabel and her mother, Delia, grieve for Julián, Anabel’s father. An eviction notice forces them out of their Barcelona home and back to the olive groves of Jaén which they once left looking for a better future. Together, they will look for a way to rebuild their future by going back to their abandoned roots. 

Valencia, 1990s. Three young journalists try to find their place in the Spain of progress and the Olympics. Despite their illusion to be part of this new modernity, they will be seduced by different levels of corruption, putting their integrity, dignity and ethics to the test.
