TIFF 2024

Spain’s roaring return to the Toronto International Film Festival (September 5-15) for the third year will include a dynamic industry events calendar and captivating roster of films. With their significant investment in production, exceptional tax incentives, and the growing number of compelling opportunities offered, Spain continues to capture worldwide industry attention as the leading audiovisual hub in Europe.

Joined by a large delegation of Spanish producers, buyers, sales agents, regional institutions and filmmakers, ICEX Spain Trade and Investment and ICAA (The Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute) will host an industry pavilion and three popular events, including their annual not-to-be-missed Spanish Fiesta. Spain will be well represented by an impressive slate of nine films announced to date, including seven world premieres screening at this year’s Festival.

The nine films screening at TIFF 2024, all Spanish co-productions, including Platform programme opener DANIELA FOREVER from Nacho Vigaloando and Mike Leigh’s HARD TRUTHS are among the 77 feature films co-produced by Spain in 2023 and illustrative of the on-going success of Spain’s ambitious plans that included a projected 30% increase in AV production from 2021 through 2025.

Building on its success with coproductions, Spain will host its popular “Do It the Spanish Way! International Co-production Forum” on Friday, September 6 to showcase exciting projects in development from five renowned international production companies. New for 2024, the final group of presenting companies was selected by TIFF industry and programming representatives from a short list of qualifying projects: Estrela Audiovisual, La Vida DR, Sábado Películas, Solita Films and Zabriskie Films arrive at TIFF with original projects spanning diverse genres from thriller, drama, comedy, action and documentary. With substantial financing already secured, these projects offer highly attractive partnership opportunities. After presenting their projects, producers will be available for one-to-one meetings to explore potential collaborations.

An annual TIFF highlight, the “Spanish Fiesta” on the evening of Saturday, September 7, invites guests back to the Malaparte rooftop at the TIFF Lightbox. By invitation only, the event provides a chance to network with the Spanish delegation, including filmmakers and talent, while enjoying fine Spanish wine and tapas under the stars.

Finally, on Monday, September 9, “Everything Under the Sun and… More!” will bring together representatives from Spanish government agencies and producers to highlight the many attractive advantages to working and shooting in Spain. The discussion will cover how the Spanish Audiovisual ecosystem is evolving and how competitive financing and tax incentives, top tier talent, state-of-the-art studios and post production facilities, and prime shooting locations have contributed to Spain becoming a first-choice destination for world class productions.
