The three titles, created by Spanish talent, are presented in a new edition of the event, the most important one dedicated exclusively to series in Europe.
Based in Lille (France) since 2018, the new edition of Series Mania Festival runs from August 26 to September 2.
For nine days this great event in the fiction-television industry will offer a combination of premieres of international series -including the fifth season of “Money Heist”, the triumphant Spanish series that Vancouver Media produces for Netflix-, and parties and masterclasses given by prestigious figures in the industry.
Series Mania Forum, which takes place from August 30 to September 1, serves as a creative incubator that supports series from conception to distribution, with a special focus on up-and-coming writers.
The forum also features two intensive writing workshops: UGC Writers Campus, in partnership with UGC Series and the Israel-France co-writing residency.
The Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, a key part of the Series Mania Forum, allow fifteen producers to present the projects they have in development to potential financial partners and compete for a prize of €50,000.
“Picadero”, by Amor y Lujo
Among those selected this year is the police thriller “Picadero”, a co-production between the Barcelona-based company Amor y Lujo and Colombia's Fidelio Films, in which Isabel Coixet is the director. “Picadero” is the only project with Spanish participation in the Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.
Produced by Andrea H. Catalá and Juan Diego Villegas, the project “Picadero”, the first creation resulting from a series co-development alliance between the two companies, demonstrates the new opportunities that co-production presents for independent creators.
Inspired by Icíar Bollaín's “Mataharis” and classic detective films, “Picadero” narrates the cases of Llanos, a female detective based in Barcelona. It was developed by Almudena Monzú, partner of Amor y Lujo, and Colombian producer and director Mauricio Leiva Cock.
Double presence at the UGC Writers Campus
The fourth edition of the UGC Writers Campus runs from August 25 to September 1 at Creative Bazaar, the new talent incubator space.
At the Creative Bazaar, young creators will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and masterclasses in the presence of experienced professionals who will support them as mentors in the development of their projects between August 30 and September 1. In addition, as part of the Forum, these emerging writers will have the opportunity to publicly present their projects to international industry professionals.
This year's UGC Writers Campus has double Spanish representation. On one hand, Jan Matheu and Victor Alonso-Berbel, who are developing the thriller “Raval” .
Both have worked as screenwriters for Atresmedia Studios and Movistar Plus, were nominated in 2016 for Best Documentary at the Gaudí Awards in Catalonia, and are developing other projects such as the fiction series “Flanagan” for The Mediapro Studio and “Moderación”, their first fictional feature film, produced by Belén Atienza and Sandra Hermida, two of the most successful Spanish production companies.
This Series Mania 2021 will be especially intense for Almudena Monzú, who in addition to participating in the Co-Pro Pitching Sessions as co-creator of “Picadero” , also presents the project “Matamala”, a series about the nature of ghosts, at the UGC Writers Campus.
Audiovisual Pavilion From Spain
ICEX's Audiovisual Pavillion From Spain will have a physical space at the Grand Palais de Lille exhibition center, where Spanish companies and institutions will participate.
Among them, the Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development, one of the pillars of which is Canary Islands Film, an initiative that offers all the information on the attractive tax advantages and locations in the Canary Islands, as well as the necessary elements to carry out audiovisual production in the islands.
Also appearing under the ICEX umbrella will be Turismo de Tenerife, an entity that through the Tenerife Film Commission, has dedicated more than 20 years to promoting the island as a filming destination and encouraging audiovisual production among Spanish and international companies, as well as The Film Agency, the Madrid-based company led by Sarah Calderón, which offers marketing solutions for producers, sales agents, distributors, and exhibitors from all over the world.
Diagonal TV, the fiction production company belonging to Banijay Iberia, responsible for historical series such as “Isabel” (TVE) and “Cathedral of the Sea” (Atresmedia, Netflix), will show from the ICEX pavilion new projects such as “Royal Palace”, a series about the Spanish Monarchy throughout the 20th century dramatized by journalist and novelist Sergio Vila-Sanjuán.

Among his television fiction projects, an area he has recently ventured into, the series “Vertical Forest”, co-produced with Red Art Workshop and Saga Films, stands out.
Also participating from Audiovisual From Spain will be iZen Producciones, one of the largest independent production companies in Spain, which through Zebra, produces the Amazon original series “El Cid”, starring Jaime Lorente ("Money Heist").
